Boulder Up a Hill - Hand Built Sculpture

Brunt of Nan project: "This is a Raku sculpture made in response from my time as a carer, my mental state and the research in stoic meditations." After researching some of the writing by author Albert Camus, he compares the absurdity of one’s life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology. Sisyphus was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The essay concludes:

"The struggle itself ... is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

"Where's My Wireless?" - Hand Built Replica

Brunt of Nan Project: "This piece was made whilst caring for my nan who was suffering with Dementia. It came from having a year being accused of pinching her wireless. I still don’t know what she is going on about. It was hard for both on us as she was so sure of herself and I really didn’t steal it. I used humour and bright colour in my work to help through the repetitive tough behaviour. It highlights my playful nature and the use of the material being therapeutic for me to find the joys within the hard times."

Pyramid - Hand Built Sculpture

Brunt of Nan Project. This Raku sculpture is an abstracted development piece from the original ‘Boulder Up a Hill’ sculpture. After researching some of the writing by author Albert Camus, he compares the absurdity of one’s life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology. Sisyphus was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The essay concludes:

Phone **** - Hand Built Replica

Brunt of Nan Project: "This piece was made when I was a full time carer. The use of the phone had brought up a lot of anxiety and fear to answering the phone and having to reply straight away to people contacting me. This piece was made as a playful replica in a pop art style to tap into the pop culture of technology. This is a very personal piece, my first phone I had as a hand-me-down from the family. I see this anxiety and the over-use of phones, in lot of people… yet we rely on it so much. I like to question the use of technology and to make active change in my life."

Tread - Hand Built & Carved Sculpture

Tread is a Raku fired sculpture. Inspired by the repeated behaviour, we in our world, continue to do. The name of this piece is a play on words and the design is a statement piece to 'tread carefully' and to change our pattern.
